Bon Jovi is a Rock and Roll band from New Jersey that has sold more than 33 million albums in the U.S. alone during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, while over 100,000,000 albums worldwide, and played live concerts in major cities in Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada and South America, in addition to a large number of cities in the USA. Bon Jovi has sometimes been classified as Hair Metal — sometimes even regarded as the form's prime shapers — but has proved much more durable than most groups so labeled. It has been influential, pioneering the "MTV Unplugged" style.

Past
History
The 80s
Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi) began to play piano and guitar at thirteen, learning Elton John songs. At that same age, Bon Jovi founded his first band, called Raze. At sixteen Bon Jovi met David Bryan (David Bryan Rashbaum) in high school (Sayreville War Memorial High School ) and founded an R&B cover band with him named Atlantic City Expressway. They played at New Jersey clubs, even though they were minors. Still in his teens, Bon Jovi played in the band Jon Bon Jovi and the Wild Ones, playing New Jersey clubs like the Fast Lane and opening for known acts in the area.
By the summer of 1982, out of school and working part-time - including in a shoe store - Jon finally got a job at the Power Station Studios, a Manhattan recording facility where his cousin, Tony Bon Jovi, was the co-owner. Bon Jovi made several demos (including one produced by Billy Squier) and sent them out to many record companies - but failed to make an impact.
At nineteen, Bon Jovi had his first recording experience, singing the song "R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas" by Meco Monardo and Daniel Oriolo on a Star Wars Christmas album, Christmas in the Stars, produced by Tony Bongiovi at the Power Station and released on the RSO label.
In 1983, local radio station WAPP 103.5FM "The Apple" had a contest, held in conjunction with St. John's University, to search for the best unsigned band. Bon Jovi used studio musicians to play on the track "Runaway" (which was written in 1980). After it won the contest, it became an instant hit in the summer of 1983. The studio musicians who helped Jon Bon Jovi to record "Runaway" were known as "The All Star Review" and they were Tim Pierce (guitar), Roy Bittan (keyboards), Frankie LaRocka (drums) and Hugh McDonald (bass).
Bon Jovi now desperately needed a band. The soon-to-be-members of the band had crossed paths in their earlier days, but the current lineup didn't come together until March of 1983. Bon Jovi gave Dave Bryan a call, who in turn called Alec John Such and Tico Torres.
A succession of guitarists followed, until Richie Sambora signed on. Such talked Bon Jovi into letting Sambora show what he could do, and Bon Jovi loved it. Before joining Bon Jovi, Sambora had toured with Joe Cocker, played with a group called Mercy and had just been called up to audition for Kiss. He also played on the album Lessons with the band Message, which was re-released on CD through Long Island Records in 1995. Message was originally signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label, although an album was never released through them.
Tico Torres was also an experienced musician by then. He had recorded with Miles Davis and played live with The Marvelettes and Chuck Berry. He had played on twenty-six records had recently recorded yet another with Frankie and the Knockouts (a Jersey band with hit singles in the early 1980s).
David Bryan was a natural recruit. He had quit the band he and Bon Jovi founded while in college, then quit college to attend Juilliard School, the famous music school.
At one show, where Bon Jovi opened for the band Scandal, the band caught the attention of record exec Derek Shulman, who signed them to PolyGram.
With the help of new-found manager Doc McGhee, the debut album, Bon Jovi, came out on January 21, 1984. The album went gold in the US (sales of over 500,000) and was also released in the UK. The guys found themselves opening for ZZ Top at the Madison Square Garden (before their first album had been released), and for Scorpions and Kiss in Europe. They also made an appearance on American Band Stand.
In 1985 Bon Jovi's second album 7800° Fahrenheit was released, but the response was poor. The leading British metal magazine Kerrang!, who had been very positive about the debut record, called the album "a pale imitation of the Bon Jovi we have got to know and learned to love". Jon Bon Jovi himself later said it could have and should have been a better disc. The band released three singles (with accompanying videos): "Only Lonely," "In And Out Of Love" and the ballad "Silent Night, all of which received widespread airplay on MTV. While the album did not do as well as they'd hoped in terms of sales, it allowed BON JOVI to get out on the road touring again, exposing them to a vast new audience and fine-tuning their live show.In April and May of 1985, BON JOVI headlined 3,000 seat venues in Europe and Japan. In May, the band began a 6-month run of U.S. tourdates supporting RATT (in the midst of that tour they managed to make appearances at the Texas Jam andd Castle Donnington's Monsters of Rock concerts in England, plus Jon did a solo appearance at the very first FARM AID.)
Their third album, Slippery When Wet, shot the band to superstardom around the world. The first single, "You Give Love A Bad Name" became the band's first Number One single on the Billboard charts. The follow-up single, "Livin On A Prayer," hit Number One as well, spending four weeks at the top position. MTV wholeheartedly embraced BON JOVI, whose camera-friendly good looks and larger-than-life live concert videos helped catapult the band into superstardom.
The album's third single, "Wanted Dead Or Alive," peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts but emerged, and still remains to this day, the BON JOVI "National Anthem" - the band's most recognizable hit. But while all this was happening at home in The States, BON JOVI was out touring, earning their superstar status by proving they were the real deal on stage, night after night after night. This time, when BON JOVI made the trip to Castle Donnington, they were the headliners,. Bon Jovi has said the album was named after the ubiquitous highway warning signs, but Bryan has said the following about the album's title: "During the recording of the record we frequently wound up in a striptease club where incredibly good looking girls were putting water and soap on each other. They became so slippery because of that, that you couldn't hold on to them even if you wanted to really bad. 'Slippery when wet!' one of us yelled out and the rest of us immediately knew: that had to be the title of the new album! Originally we were going to put a picture of some huge breasts, the really big ones, on the cover; but when the PRMC (a moral board under command of Tipper Gore, wife of former Vice President of the United States Al Gore) found out we were in big trouble. So we made it into a very decent cover."
When SLIPPERY WHEN WET was released in April of 1986, BON JOVI was the support act for .38 SPECIAL. By the end of 1986, BON JOVI were well into six months of headline dates in arenas across America (including a sold-out New Year's Eve concert at their hometown venue, New Jersey's Brendan Byrne Arena.) With the overwhelming success of SLIPPERY WHEN WET (it spent 94 weeks on the Billboard charts and eight of those weeks at #1,).The album has sold in excess of 12 million copies in US since its release in late 1986.Bon Jovi were bona fide superstars. While they were determined to succeed based upon musical merits alone, the appeal of the band, especially Jon's cover-boy good looks, made them MTV staples and the chosen wall decoration for many teenagers' walls.
The next album from Bon Jovi was New Jersey released in 1988. The album was recorded very shortly after the tour for Slippery because the band wanted to prove that they were not just a one hit wonder."Bad Medicine" was the first single and it spent two weeks at #1. The follow up singles "Born To Be My Baby," "I'll Be There For You" (which also hit #1) Lay Your Hands On Me and "Living In Sin" all charted in the top 10 and were huge hits on MTV. BON JOVI even made the news when the video for "Living In Sin" was banned by MTV for being too risqué (it was re-edited and MTV aired put it in heavy rotation.)Perhaps, JON BON JOVI and RICHIE SAMBORA's most influential performance was on the 1989 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS. Armed only with acoustic guitars, JON and RICHIE performed "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and "Livin' On A Prayer." To Jon and Richie, it wasn't much of a big deal; the songs were written on two acoustic guitars and, therefore, stripping them down to their basic form was a natural thing to do. However, the response from those who witnessed the performance, both live at the awards and at home on television, was instantaneous and enthusiastic. This performance has generally been acknowledged (even among MTV staffers) as the inspirational spark that led to the MTV UnPlugged series and the catalyst for the subsequent popularity of the unplugged movement in popular music.BON JOVI mounted another huge worldwide tour that continued throughout 1989 and 1990. They visited more than 20 countries and performed more than 248 shows before it was all over. The personal highpoint for the band was their June 11, 1989 sell-out HOMECOMING at GIANTS STADIUM in New Jersey. In August of 1989, the band headed to RUSSIA for the MOSCOW MUSIC PEACE FESTIVAL, a 2-day rock concert staged at the Lenin Olympic Stadium to promote two goals: 1) raise awareness about and provide treatment for drug and alcohol abuse among Russian teens and 2) introduce Russia to rock 'n' roll American style. BON JOVI were the first band officially sanctioned by the Russian government to perform in Russia and NEW JERSEY was released on the state-owned record label, Melodiya, a privilege no Western artist had ever been granted before (not the Beatles, not the Rolling Stones… just BON JOVI.) But the non-stop touring was taking its toll on the band. By the end of the New Jersey tour, BON JOVI had 16 months of concerts under their belt and the band members were exhausted -- physically, mentally and emotionally. Finally, after the last tourdate, and without any clear plans for their future, the band members just went home.
The 90s
Between 1990 and 1992 the band members went their separate ways for a while. Bon Jovi made the soundtrack for the movie "Young Guns II", helped by Elton John, Aldo Nova and Jeff Beck among others. The song "Blaze Of Glory" was a #1 hit. Jon won a GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD for Best Song From a Motion Picture. He also received GRAMMY and the OSCAR nominations for the song and, although he didn't take home either of those statuettes, JON had the honor of performing the song at The Academy Award Ceremonies.Sambora released a solo album, Stranger in This Town, in 1991. Bryan made the music for the movie "The Netherworld", but also ended up in the hospital with an illness due to a South American parasite. Torres avoided music and the music business altogether. Such took a fall off of his motor, that he had to develop a whole new way to hold his instrument.
Eventually the band returned with the album Keep the Faith in 1992. "Keep The Faith" was released in November of 1992 to the most critical acclaim the band had ever received. Much more complex, lyrically and musically, the album proved BON JOVI could still be a viable (and very successful) band in 1992, despite the decline of the late '80s pop metal genre into which the band had been lumped and despite the industry's (and audience's) growing affinity for grunge rock. As BON JOVI's sound morphed itself to work in the 90's music scene, their image changed as well. Gone were the excessive rock 'n' roll trappings of spandex and hairspray and hair… CNN carried the news when JON cut his trademark long locks. And, though the media focused far too much attention on Jon's hair (as it always had,) the new look represented what had always been the mission of the band: no frills, just rock. The album featured a more mature sound and contained more serious lyrics. It included the hit singles "Keep the Faith" followed by the ballad "Bed Of Roses" which was a huge Top Ten hit in US "In These Arms" and "I'll Sleep When I Am Dead. It also features fan favourites like the epic "Dry County" and "I Believe".BON JOVI headed out on the road and visited countries the band had never seen before (headlining stadiums in Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.) The second chapter in BON JOVI's career had begun.
In 1994, Bon Jovi released a "greatest hits" album entitled "Cross Road", which also contained two new tracks:"SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT" and "ALWAYS," a monster ballad that spent thirty-two weeks on the charts and became one of BON JOVI's all-time hugest hits. The "ALWAYS" single sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. Album sales soared all over the world and BON JOVI's popularity grew and grew exponentially on an international level
Such left the band after this album. While he has not been officially replaced, Hugh McDonald has handled studio and live bass duties since then.
Bon Jovi said, regarding the departure of Such: "Of course it hurts. But I learned to accept and respect it. The fact that I'm a workaholic, studio in, studio out, stage on, stage off, want to be dealing with music day and night, doesn't mean everyone else has to adjust to that pace. Alec wanted to quit for a while now so it didn't come as a complete surprise."
With the 1995 album These Days, Bon Jovi took the mature rock sound they had developed on Keep The Faith further. The record as a whole was darker and more downbeat than the usual Bon Jovi fare, and as a result, despite critical kudos, it spun off only one hit single in the US, "This Ain't A Love Song" and it sold "only" a little over a million records in US. Nevertheless, the other tracks proved sufficiently popular to garner various successful European singles. It was on the These Days tour, that Bon Jovi played at Wembley Stadium in 1995 on a sell-out three night's running concert. It is widely considered to be their best rock concert, featuring such hits as Livin' On A Prayer, Keep The Faith, an excellent, heart-felt rendition of Always, and showcasing new songs from These Days. It is particularly memorable because it is the same weekend that the album got to No. 1 in the UK charts. This tour date can be viewed on video, and has been re-issued on DVD, both titled "Live From London".
The 00s
The question at hand was whether five years between the release of BON JOVI albums would be too big an obstacle for the band to overcome. Signs that the band's following was as devoted as ever were proven when a server-crashing number of Bon Jovi fans logged into www.bonjovi.com to watch a live webcast performance from Sanctuary Sound II studio in February 2000. By the time CRUSH was released (May 2000 internationally and June 2000 domestically,) the first single, "Its My Life," was a bona fide smash hit around the globe and was well on its way to becoming a huge hit in America. CRUSH went double platinum in the United States. The band that had become international superstars were reminding the folks back in America just what was so special about one of their best rock exports.
CRUSH debuted on the U.S. Billboard charts at #9. Worldwide it sold more than 8 million albums and spawned three singles: "IT'S MY LIFE", "SAY IT ISN'T SO" and "THANK YOU FOR LOVING ME." BON JOVI received two GRAMMY nominations: Best Rock Album for "CRUSH" and Best Rock Performance by Duo/Group for "IT'S MY LIFE." The video for "IT'S MY LIFE" won the MY VH-1 AWARD for "My Favorite Video." BON JOVI played stadiums in Japan and Europe over the summer of 2001 - playing to more than one million fans in less than 30 shows
Upon their return to the U.S. the band did a sold-out arena tour in the Fall of 2000, followed in the Spring of 2001 with a sold-out arena/amphitheatre run of dates in America. They revisited stadiums in Japan and Europe and in June of 2001, BON JOVI sold out two more concerts at London's historic WEMBLEY STADIUM, becoming the last ever concerts held at the legendary venue before it's demolition. One more leg of U.S. shed dates followed, all of which were leading up to the most triumphant declaration that BON JOVI was back and bigger than EVER. In July 2001, BON JOVI sold-out two homecoming concerts at New Jersey's GIANTS STADIUM. The Friday and Saturday concerts, filmed for VH-1 and aired on Sunday night, were not only fulfilling career and personal highlights for the band but the broadcast became VH1's second highest-rated live program in the network's history.
While the band was out touring in 2001, they released ONE WILD NIGHT: LIVE 1985-2001. This was BON JOVI's first-ever live album. The songs were culled from archives of recorded material the band had been collecting from their earliest days on the road right through the current tour. Considered by the band to be a "snapshot" of Bon Jovi in concert over the years, to date the live album has sold more than 2 million copies. And, to solidify what concertgoers and Bon Jovi fans had known all along, BON JOVI received the 2002 MY VH-1 AWARD for "HOTTEST LIVE SHOW." (It was at this same awards show that Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora surprised a live theatre full of attendees and a live television audience with a beautiful rendition of "Here Comes The Sun" as a tribute to the recently-deceased George Harrison.)
When the CRUSH and ONE WILD NIGHT tours were complete, the members of BON JOVI had anticipated a brief vacation before work would begin on the band's 9th studio album. But on September 11th, the world changed. Within days of the terrorist attacks, JON and RICHIE had filmed Public Service Announcements for the Red Cross and performed as part of the historic A TRIBUTE TO HEROES live telethon. One month later, the band participated at two Monmouth County Alliance of Neighbors concerts in Red Bank, NJ to raise funds for the families close the band's hometowns who were affected by the World Trade Center disaster. And on October 21st, BON JOVI performed at the monumental CONCERT FOR NEW YORK at Madison Square Garden, raising relief funds and honoring those who worked to save lives during the terror.
In late 2002, Bounce, the band's follow-up to Crush, hit stores. The launch of BOUNCE began with the biggest launch event the band had ever done. BON JOVI were personally asked by the National Football League (NFL) to help launch the 2002 NFL Season with a kickoff event. On September 5, 2002, BON JOVI performed a concert in New York City's Times Square to celebrate the opening of the NFL season and drew more than half a million people to watch. Following the band's performance in Times Square, a police escort to a heliport allowed the band to chopper across the Hudson River into New Jersey, where they became the first ever artist to perform at Giants Stadium during an New York Giants game. BON JOVI performed "It's My Life" at the Giants vs. 49ers game that nite. History was made."Bounce" was released worldwide in October 2002 and debuted on the U.S. Billboard charts at #2. This marked the highest ever Billboard debut for the band to date. Though Bounce did not enjoy quite the level of success of its predecessor, the album did produce the hit singles, "Everyday" and "Misunderstood". The band went on a U.S. tour for this album, during which they made history as the last band to play Veteran's stadium in Philidelphia before it was torn down. The European leg of the BOUNCE tour ran from mid-May until the final show. On June 28th, 2003, BON JOVI peformed before more than 92,000 fans in London's Hyde Park. It was an unprecedented event. Then it was back to the United States.July and August saw BON JOVI continue the BOUNCE tour in US amphitheatres and stadiums until the final two homecoming concerts at New Jersey's Giants Stadium. It had become tradition - the victory lap double concerts. The first night was torrential rains the likes of which only Noah and his animals had witnessed prior yet, no one left the stadium. Soaked bodies were dancing in the aisles. Jon declared the show the world's biggest wet t-shirt contest! The following night, BON JOVI ended the BOUNCE tour with a second sold-out concert The band also released a promotional album through Target. The album featured eight demo and live tracks.
Following the "Bounce" tour, which wrapped up in August 2003, Bon Jovi embarked on what would become a unique and ambitious project. Originally intending to produce an album consisting of live acoustic performances of various songs, the band ended up rewriting, re-recording and reinventing 12 of their biggest hits in a new and much different light. This Left Feels Right was released in November 2003, with the title referring to the "left turn" of sorts that the band took in redoing the songs heard on this record.
The following year the band released a box set entitled 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong, the title an homage to Elvis Presley's 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong. The set consisted of four CDs packed with 38 unreleased and 12 rare tracks, as well as a DVD. The box set marked the sales of 100 million Bon Jovi albums and also commemorated the 20th anniversary of the release of the band's first record in 1984. In November 2004 Bon Jovi was honored with the award for Merit at the American Music Awards.
Bon Jovi participated in Live 8 on July 2, 2005. A new song, "Have a Nice Day," was debuted at the event, alongside the classics, "Livin' on a Prayer" and "It's My Life".
On August 20th, 2005 Bon Jovi headlined Miller Brewing Co.'s Big Brew-Ha, celebrating its 150th anniversary. The free stadium concert at Miller Park in Milwaukee included one preview song from the band's forthcoming "Have a Nice Day".
In September 2005 Bon Jovi was honored with the Diamond Award at the World Music Awards for selling 100 million albums.
Bon Jovi's long-awaited new album, Have a Nice Day, was released on September 20th, 2005 (U.S.), followed by an international tour which kicked off in early November. The album topped the charts around the world, landing on the number two spot on Billboards the first week of sales. Bon Jovi had a career-best first week, selling over 202,000 albums. "Have a Nice Day" was the first single off the new album, and debuted at radio worldwide on July 18, 2005. The second single, "Who Says You Can't Go Home," has since debuted as well, including a duet version with country singer Jennifer Nettles of the band Sugarland. The third single off the album is entitled "Welcome to Wherever You Are."
Soon after the release of "Have A Nice Day", the band started gearing up for a new 2005/2006-world tour. This tour - being shorter than previous ones with only seventy-five shows - brings the band to numerous stages and arenas throughout the world, including the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium on June 10th and 11th, 2006. Bon Jovi were the last band to play the old Wembley Stadium before it was leveled in 2000, and may be the first band to play after its reconstruction. However, doubts have been expressed by stadium builders Multiplex as of 21st February 2006 as to whether the stadium will be complete in time. The first major event at the stadium - the FA Cup Final 2006, on May 12th - has already been moved to Cardiff. Following dates in Japan and Europe, Bon Jovi will return to the US in the summer of 2006 for additional touring in the states, and will wrap up their world tour in the band's native New Jersey at Giants Stadium.
On January 21, 2006 in Hamilton, Ontario, Bon Jovi's plane overshot and skidded off the runway after a show in Buffalo; none of the band members were harmed.
On February 7, 2006 a promotional album, "Live from the Have a Nice Day Tour," was released through Wal-Mart. It contains six live tracks recorded in December 2005 in Boston.
On February 19, 2006, Bon Jovi performed as the headlining act prior to Nascar's Daytona 500. The band performed "It's My Life" and their two new singles "Have a Nice Day" and "Who Says You Can't Go Home", the latter with Jennifer Nettles.
