A membrane-bounded plant cell organelle, especially found in germinating seeds, and involved in the breakdown and conversion of stored fatty acids to acetyl-CoA for the glyoxylate bypass. Since they are rich in catalase, glyoxysomes may be related to microbodies or peroxisomes, or be derived from them.
