A hamartoma is an abnormal growth of normal cells.
A hamartosis is a tumour-like lesion, the growth of which is co-ordinated with the patient. Unlike a true neoplasm, it lacks autonomy. They are always benign and usually consist of two or more mature cell types.
A focal malformation that resembles a neoplasm, grossly and even microscopically, but results from faulty development, with a disproportion or abnormal mixture of tissue elements normally present at the site: develops and grows at virtually the same rate as normal tissue, and is not likely to compress or invade adjacent tissue or structures.
A hamartoma of kidney is called "angiomyolipoma", and is frequently found in tuberous sclerosis.
