General Khin Nyunt (Burmese:
; born October 11, 1939) was the Prime Minister of Myanmar and the chief of intelligence for the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces). Khin Nyunt was born in Kyauktan, Yangon Division, Myanmar. He was appointed Prime Minister in August 2003. On October 18, 2004 he was dismissed and put under protective custody, apparently the result of a power struggle with Than Shwe regarding the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi. Khin Nyunt favoured a more liberal approach, while Than Shwe was more aggressive and severe.
Recent developments at the end of 2004 turned out that Khin Nyunt was purged by the Generals who favour Than Shwe and would not want to negotiate with Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD party, which won the election in 1990 in a landslide vistory. Nyunt, his two sons, and several of his allies were convicted and sentenced to Insein Prison by Burmese courts on July 22, 2005.
