This is a list of the countries of the world sorted by area. Only sovereign states are ranked; outlying territories of sovereign states are listed but not ranked. Total areas are included, i.e., land and inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Claims of parts of Antarctica by various countries are not included. For a graphical version of this list, see List of countries by area (graphical).
