Manzikert)
Malazgirt (formerly also called Manzikert) is a town in Muş in eastern Turkey, with a population of 23 697 (year 2000) (??of 68 990).
Manzikert was an important trading post of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. In one of the worse defeats in Byzantine's history, Emperor Romanus Diogenes was defeated and captured by the Turks' sultan, Alp Arslan in May of 1071, now known as the Battle of Manzikert. The victory by the Turks led ultimately to Anatolia becoming the heartland of the Ottoman Empire.
