Michael James Hucknall (born 8 June 1960 in, Manchester), commonly known as Mick "Red" Hucknall, is the lead singer of the British band Simply Red.

He was born in St Mary's Hospital, Manchester and lived very briefly in Bredbury before settling in Denton, the district with which he is most associated. Mick was raised by his father - Reg - who came originally from Barrow in Furness. Mick's mother was of Jewish [1] descent. Mick attended Audenshaw School.

The singer began his music career in the late seventies by forming the Frantic Elevators. The band released four singles, including a version of "Holding Back The Years", which he would later record with Simply Red. Mick's fanbase is supposed to be one of the most loyal around.
He is also one of the founders and generally seen as the fincancial backer of the reggae label Blood and Fire.

He is a prominent celebrity supporter of the UK Labour Party and even said to be a close friend of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Furthermore Mick is a staunch Manchester United supporter and even wanted to buy it in 1998. Along with Johnny Depp and Sean Penn Hucknall part-owns the Parisian restaurant-bar Man Ray.

Mick has recently had the dubious honour of being voted Sky One's number 1 British celebrity minger. Nevertheless he is renowned for his ability to attract beautiful women. He was already the boyfriend of Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Following the Asian Tsunami, Mick Hucknall made a public statement of support for the charity SOS Children and asked any of his fans who were able to, to consider following his lead supporting the charity.
