The Military of Romania consists of three branches:
Romania joined NATO in 2004. As a consequence, extensive preparations have been made for the transition to a professional army of about 90,000 men and women until 2007, but the process has obviously not been finished yet. About 75,000 of these are the military personnel, while 15,000 is made up of civilians. Conscription is to be abolished by 2007 according to the Romanian Ministry of Defence.
Overall the military force of Romania (Including Army, Navy, Air and Air-defence) consists of 112,000 military personnel and 28,000 civilians.
