The Flag of the Queen of Malta
This title was given to Elizabeth II who was Queen of Malta between 1964 and 1974. In 1974, known as Republic Day, Malta became a Republic and the President was appointed as the Head of State.
In Parliament, when the constitution was changed and the Queen, no longer remained Head of State, the prime minister Dom Mintoff stated that "The change to a republican system is in no way meant as a sign of disrespect to Her Majesty or the Royal Family... No other country has retained a foreign monarch as the head of state".
