Balsas River

(Redirected from Río Balsas)
For the Brazilian city, see Balsas. For the Ecuadorian canton, see Balsas, Ecuador.

The Balsas River is a river in south-central Mexico, and is one that country's largest rivers, forming a large basin called the Balsas Basin.

It rises as the Atoyac River at the confluence of the San Martin and Zahuapan rivers in Puebla state and flows southwestward and then westward through Guerrero state, in which it is the principal river and is locally known as the Mezcala.

It forms the border between Guerrero and Michoacán states and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Mongrove Point, adjacent to the city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán.

It is 771 kilometres long.

There are many rapids along its length. The river is used to generate hydroelectric power. It is also a source of water for irrigation.
