San Ġwann is the 7th-largest city in Malta, with a population of 13,000.
San Ġwann has an ancient history which is woven into the national history of Malta. For hundreds of years this locality, overlooking Valletta Harbour, was known as Msierah as well as Tal-Ghorghar.
In Neolithic times people definitely lived on this dominating hill between the two valleys of Wied Ghomor and Wied Ghollieqa, as attested by the famous cart ruts. They may have lived in caves similar to those behind the Tal-Mensija Sanctuary. Around them were megalithic temples built in the 15th century BC.
A number of factories also have established themselves in San Gwann. In the past ST Microelectronics used to carry out part of its work in San Gwann.
The parish church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.
