Southern Europe is a region of the European continent, typically referring to the European countries with coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.

Although there is no precise definition, the UN regional categorisation scheme for statistical purposes coincides with general notions of what states comprise Southern Europe:

• The Italian peninsula
  • Italy
  • Vatican City
  • San Marino
• The Balkan Peninsula

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • the European part of Turkey (Rumelia) *
